HAND-DYEING PROCESS

Prior to dipping the Shibori piece into the indigo vat, the Shibori piece is immersed and soaked in water.

Ingredients for the indigo vat:  indigo powder and mordants.

YAYOI SHIBORI uses the following mordant combinations:  sodium hydrosulfite with soda ash and fructose with calcium hydroxide (slaked lime).

We source our vat ingredients from Dharma Trading (CA) & Botanical Colors (WA).

Shibori piece being hand-dyed.  Depending on the depth of indigo color desired each Shibori piece is dipped and oxidized 5 to 10 times or more.
